Marshall Anderson, Sr. Obituary

Marshall G. Anderson, Sr., age 95, of Morgantown, KY, peacefully passed away on August 23,
2025 at his residence in the Sandy Creek Community of Butler County. He was born at home in
historical Townsville, Butler County on January 16, 1930 to Robert Anderson and Verdie Brown
Anderson. Marshall was baptized at 15 years of age at Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Marshall proudly served in the Navy aboard the Battleship USS Missouri (BB-63) from 1949 -
1953, during the Korean War. One of his joys was attending annual “Mighty Mo’” reunions that
took place across the country and swapping stories with his shipmates of their time in the
service on that mighty ship. He was so proud of our Military. Marshall was honored to be
selected as the “Veteran of the Year” in 2020 for Butler County. One special memory he held
dear was being able to return to the Battleship, now docked in Hawaii, and have a flag flown in
his honor.

Although he chose to leave the family farm for the big city of Evansville in 1953, he always had
a garden to tend. He supplied many a friend and family with his “Dad to Table” produce from
the abundance of his harvest. He loved to tell the story of when his daughter helped him plant
peas many years ago. She walked behind him picking up all the seeds he had dropped on the
row he was working and handed them back to him. His many backyard gardens were his daily
respite.

Before he “retired” from his position as a sheetmetal worker, he spent 40 years perfecting his
craft at George Koch Sons. In retirement, he was regularly called in to make the snips and cuts
in sheetmetal for duct work. He possessed the kind of craftsmanship the younger generation
had not mastered yet. If you showed him a picture of something you wanted, he’d make it for
you. No need for a pattern, he could just eyeball it.
He liked a good race, too. Whether it was Nascar on an oval track or bringing the trifecta down
the home stretch, he was more than happy to be in the stands whether winning or “just feeding
the horses”. Marshall loved watching college basketball, specifically the University of Kentucky
college basketball.

He taught us to work hard at whatever you do and never be afraid to try something new (like
wiring your first house for electricity whether you knew how to or not). He was a man of faith
and knew the value of serving others. He showed us, by his actions, how to love others, forgive
missteps and share a belly laugh any chance you get. We will never forget the smile that
always greeted us every time we saw him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all but one of his brothers and sisters.

Marshall is survived by his wife of 37 years, Virginia Anderson. His children, Marshall Anderson,
Jr. (Janet), Lee Anderson (Susan) and Jenny Anderson White (Kent). Five grandchildren;
Christy Smith (Jeremy), Katie Anderson, Jessamy Anderson-Hill (Jeff), Robert Anderson,
Temple Anderson (Jenny). Great grandchildren; Aidan, Maddox and Kate Smith, Ben Anderson,
Joseph and Jordan Hill. One brother; Rayburn (Doll) Anderson and many nieces, nephews and
treasured friends.

The family wishes to share a special thank you to Kerry and Lesia McKinney, Adam Shelton and
the care team of Hosparus Health.
