Mary Elder Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Cottrell Elder, 82, of Morgantown, Ky. passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at her residence. She was born in Hartford, Ky. on July 20, 1937 to the late Rev. Charles and Eunice Arndell Cottrell.  Mary was a member of The Promise Seekers Church in Sacramento, Ky., former Chaplain of the D.A.R., taught Bible studies for Andreas Mission and was a teacher's aide for 19 years for the Butler Co. School System, this was her dream come true, as she always wanted to be a teacher and until recently she would still talk about all her little children.  Mary enjoyed working in her yard and tending her flowers, loved to sing, teach Bible study and write.  For many years she was a columnist for the Green River Republican where she wrote Eden's View.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her two sons Dale and Richard "Butch" Elder; sisters Margie Goodman, Alda Brooks, Estelle Whobrey and brothers Henry Cottrell, Paul Cottrell, LB Cottrell and Jr Cottrell.

 

Mary is survived by her niece, the daughter she never had, Tammie Williams and husband Gayle of Morgantown; grandchildren Kris Williams (Tiffany), Matt Williams, Trista Stepp (Aaron) and Lee Williams Keeler; great grandchildren Stetson, Blayton  and Aspen Williams, Mia and Bella Williams, Zachary and Drew Embry, Gabby Navarrete, AJ and Jaxon Stepp; her fur baby Bella and many nieces and nephews.

 

Due to the directives concerning large gatherings, we are abiding by rules set forth by the Governor of Kentucky concerning the health and well being of our staff and the families we serve.  All services for Mary Elder will be private and under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.  Burial will be held in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
